Potty training is… a journey. A messy, patience-testing journey. While there are a variety

of methods,  from elimination communication to reward charts to simply pulling up the rugs for a few days and going pantless. As a mom, you choose the method that’s right for your family. And sometimes you have to cycle through them.

When we started on our potty training journey with our now three-year-old, Bella,  I read a lot of blogs and watched a lot of YouTube videos. Bella would sit on the potty often, but the timing took a while. I tested out a variety of products and tossed a few (goodbye flimsy step stools and potty chairs!). I’d also see these really adorable, aesthetic toddler potty stations — complete with tiny hand-washing setups and perfectly curated bathroom accessories. Loved the idea, but there was no way I was going to find the time to set that up.

With some testing, a few accidents, and big celebrations, we did it!

This is the exact potty training kit I put together for my toddler that worked. Everything in here is simple, affordable, and designed to give you fewer “oh no” moments and more “okay, we’re doing this!” wins.

What to Include in Your Potty Training Kit

1. A Potty They are Excited to Use

Think: cute, simple, wipeable. Toddlers love having something that’s “their size.”Put it in the bathroom and let them explore it before you even begin training.

We got two of these BabyBjörn Potty Chairs – it’s cute but also matched my bathroom.

2. Sticker Chart

Reward charts work so well for toddlers. You can set it up however you like. We did one sticker for pee and two for poop. You can also try  every time they sit, try, or succeed — they get a sticker. At the end of filling out each sticker chart, Bella got to choose either a trip to get ice cream or pizza ( yes, I know, not everyone agrees with this reward system but it worked for us!).

And yes, sometimes a sticker is the difference between tears and triumph.

We loved this Hadley Designs Potty Training Chart  for girls, and there are tons of great options for boys as well

3. Potty Training Underwear

The “I’m a big kid now” moment is real.

These little undies help them feel wetness faster, which speeds things up… without you going straight to naked-training if that’s not your thing. They were also very absorbent and we rarely had leaks with these MooMoo Baby 8 Packs Potty Training Pants

4. Flushable Wipes

Okay, I hadn’t considered these until we were more into our journey but these were a gamechanger!

These Honest Company Plant-Based Toddler Flushable Wipes  make cleanup quick and gentle without irritating little bottoms.

5. Hand Sanitizer

Great for bathroom trips on the go or when your toddler touches literally everything before washing their hands.

Get a bunch, we keep them in the bathroom, my purse, diaper bags, cards, kitchen etc… These are our favorite alcohol free versions: Babyganics Foaming Pump Hand Sanitizer

6. A Toddler Step Stool + Faucet Extender

This is the thing no one tells you about, but it matters. Why don’t you hear about this more?I don’t know but I tell everyone I hear is starting out potty training!

Once they start potty training, they want independence FAST, and hand-washing is part of that.A step stool + faucet extender lets them reach the sink without help, which keeps the momentum (and the confidence!) going.

This COOSEYA 2 Step Stools for Kids kit came with two step-stool and faucet extenders – we had tried out several others and these were sturdy and fit in small nooks in our bathrooms.

7. A Comfortable Toilet Seat Attachment

If you’re training straight on the big toilet, you’ll want a toddler insert. It removes the fear of “falling in” and helps them relax enough to actually go. You can buy the ones that attach to the seats but we found that having a small portable one was great too. This Frida Baby Fold-and-Go Portable Potty Seat for Toilets folds up into it’s own carrying and we totally took it to our AirBnB for vacation and to the aquarium and playground while we were potty training

8. Fun Underwear Calendar

This was an awesome find. I started every morning for 12 mornings with this calendar so that Bella has something to look forward to. She would choose one ‘door’ to open and have a new princess underwear to wear for the day. This helped so much!

There are some options for boys as well – check out the Disney Girls Princess Exclusive 12 Days of Surprise Unboxing Panties

How to Set It All Up (5 Minutes, Tops)

  • Put the potty chair or seat insert in the bathroom they use most.

  • Set the sticker chart at eye level but keep the stickers out of reach

  • Keep underwear and wipes in a small basket that’s easy to grab.

  • Put sanitizer by the door or in your bag.

  • Place the step stool and faucet extender at the sink now, so they get used to it early.

Two minutes later you’ll feel like you’re running a tiny, adorable potty training station

Extra Quick Wins for Success

  • Pick a weekend where you’re home and not running 28 errands.

  • Let them practice sitting on the potty leading up to it with no expectations.

  • Celebrate the tries, not just the wins (stickers work miracles here).

  • Keep backup clothes handy — preferably more than you think you need.

  • Stay calm (or pretend very convincingly).

Potty training isn’t linear. It’s a zig-zaggy roller coaster with snacks, maybe some bribes, and proud high-fives at the end.
